Applied Tech Products Successfully Delivers Composite Computer Connector Component

ATP Engineered Rubber and Plastics Group announces the successful delivery of a new composite-construction connector component to a major American and international computer manufacturer. The component is subsequently assembled into a pad-on-pad connector for a computer drive. The unique connector functions by compressing a flexible circuit against a circuit board, forming an electrical contact point. The component is fabricated from two materials, a Ryton base and a silicone overmold. Ryton, an engineered plastic, is used for strength and temperature resistance. Silicone, a thermoset elastomer, provides a cushion for the compressed electrical contact. The base, measuring 3-3/4” length x 7/16” wide x 1/8” thick, is precision molded to +/-0.002” tolerances. The Ryton base is then silicone overmolded. The manufacturing challenge that ATP engineers faced was the resistance two dissimilar materials present forming a strong chemical bond. The challenge was met when engineers jointly developed the process with the customer to produce an exacting surface treatment yielding a permanent chemical bond.“ATP offers customers unique manufacturing and engineering expertise,” explains Fred Sadr, Technical Director at ATP. “There are companies who mold plastics and there are companies that work with thermoset elastomers. But ATP offers expertise in both while providing customers complete accountability with no outsourcing. In effect we give our customers total project management,” Sadr concludes. ATP Engineered Rubber & Plastics Group provides unique world class precision custom injection molding of both rubber & plastic engineered components. With our global facilities, we concentrate on “total solutions” in the following markets: Consumer & Industrial Products; Electronics; Medical Devices and Pharmaceutical Packaging.
